The Obsolete Computer Museum

This is a must-visit site for electronic nostalgia buffs. Ever wonder what the first laptop looked like? Take a look on this site. By the way, we learned that the first laptop came with it’s own built-in word processor, had 32K of RAM, a 300 baud internal modem, and would run for 20 hours on four AA batteries. Interesting? The operator of this cool site collects old computer hardware and might be able to help with your questions about dated equipment. Some vintage electronic hardware can be valuable, so if you’ve got a digital dinosaur sitting out in the garage, you might want to visit ObsoleteComputerMuseum.org before dumping it.

Computer Stupidities

The following is a large collection of stories and anecdotes about clueless computer users. It's a baffling phenomenon that in today's society an individual, who might in other circumstances be considered smart and wise, can sit down in front of a computer screen and instantly lose every last shred of common sense he ever possessed. Complicate this phenomenon with a case of "computerphobia," and you end up with tech support personnel having phone conversations that are funny in retrospect but seem like perfectly valid motives for wild machine gun shooting sprees at the time. You will read stories in this file that will convince you that among the human race are human-shaped artichokes futilely attempting to break the highly regarded social convention that vegetables should not operate electronic equipment. And yet, amidst the vast, surging quantities of stupidity are perfectly excusable technological mishaps -- but that are amusing nonetheless. After all, even the best of us engages in a little brainless folly every once in a while. Visit Website: Computer Stupidities

Here's a cool tip from the LockerGnome Newsletter about Internet Explorer.

Question: Every time I click a link that opens a new Internet Explorer window, the window opens off of the screen. I have tried resetting the defaults in Internet Options but that didn't fix the problem. Do you know how I can fix this?

Answer: I think we can manage to help you on this subject. The reason why a new Internet Explorer window opens off the screen is because the registry values for Internet Explorer are either damaged or incorrect. Now, I am going to tell you how to fix the problem, but it will require you to edit the registry and I recommend that you back it up first. For steps on how to backup your Windows registry, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 322755.

When you're ready to edit the registry, do the following:

1. To get to the registry, click Start | Run, then type "regedit" (sans quotes) and click OK.

2. Now, navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main.

3. Once there, you need to delete the registry value called "windows_placement" (sans quotes).

4. Now, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Desktop \ Old WorkArea, and then delete the registry value named "OldWorkAreaRects" (sans quotes).

5. All that is left is to restart your computer, and from now on your Internet Explorer new windows will open on the screen. Good luck! [Brian]

Spyware & Adware no one wants it. Yet everyone who surfs the net eventually gets some. Thankfully we have some great utilities to help us in our fight to remove it. Such as Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D These excellent utilities will scan your system for known spyware and adware and remove it. Now there is a new spyware fighter called SpywareBlaster! Below is a brief description:

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
How? By setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a "Yes/No" box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine. Go to Website: SpywareBlaster
